Me Made Maternity Week 1 Wrap Up

Day 1: Butterick B6068 Maternity Dress by Mom in cotton
First, I want to say I love this dress and everything that went into it.
Looking super pregnant...

Zuko: "My mom is crazy..."

Here's the hardest thing about doing Me Made Maternity: there are not a lot of patterns for maternity clothes.  Back in February when I hadn't popped yet, my mom and I went on a pilgrimage to Joann's for maternity clothes patterns.  When my mom was pregnant with us in the 80's, her mother made maternity clothes for her to wear, which saved her a lot of time and money.  However, nowadays, patterns were few and far between.  I think we found a total of like three patterns, and we chose one with dresses and one with tops.  We still haven't found a good one for overalls/dungarees.  (I found a pair for sale at Motherhood that was abo $76, and I'm not sure that I'm ready to pay that much for overalls.)  My mom swears by overalls for pregnant ladies because you can hide any gapping between your belly and your pants, so we'll see if I cave and buy those Motherhood overalls.

Anyway, this dress made by mom was a huge hit.  I showed her how to add pockets to the seam, and she made them even better by making them super deep and useful.  Love the length and everything, and it’s designed to pretty much accentuate the bump, so I felt super pregnant but comfortable in this.  It actually looks a lot better with the leggings off, but I needed to get maternity shorts (they arrived Thursday) to make it wearable without leggings.  Plus, it’s been a bit chilly this week, so leggings have been necessary for my sanity.

Day 2:  Seamwork Hayden top in Gertie fabric from Joann's

Before my pregnancy, this was my favorite top pattern.  It still is.  I have like 4 Haydens that I made before they updated and improved the pattern, and I plan to make some from the new and improved version.  It’s comfy and cute and I can dress it up or down.  This one is just an adorable fabric that I love.  Plus, this shirt still fits and makes me feel normal!  (Which is a super important feeling for pregnant ladies, you'd be surprised.)

Day 3:  Sewaholic Rue skirt in polyester fabric from Joann's

I love how this outfit turned out.  This is a skirt I wore last year as well (I had done the elastic band poorly and the skirt literally fell apart when I got to work, so I had to re-sew it, which I am so glad I did.)  Elastic waistbands are magic, skirts are magic, I loved wearing this outfit and felt like I actually looked good in it, which it turns out right now for me is a huge deal.

Day 4:  Seamwork Jane in floral jersey fabric from Girl Charlee

For this year, this is my favorite make.  I am so proud of how I did this shirt that I made another one, plus another one in the works.  It turned out so cute and flattering and useful.  I can tie it higher or lower and it will work for me even after I have the baby.  Plus, this fabric is so comfy that it doesn't itch, which I did not realize was such a thing.  Having longer shirts has become so important for me.  I hate feeling like Winnie the Pooh when my tummy sticks out.  It's not a good look.  Also, this shirt is so oddly on trend with current fashion that I feel so fancy and actually cool for once.  I'm excited to try it with skirts and other outfits.

Weekend Looks
Over the weekends due to just sheer comfort and ease, I wore Me-Made accessories and didn't photograph them.  Specifically an infinity scarf made from scrap fabric that I absolutely love and then some friendship bracelets each day.  I saw girls making them just this morning at school and I had a surge of joy and nostalgia about the 90's being back.  I may get more photos after this weekend, but the photo part isn't as important for me as just wearing the clothes.

Overall Reflection

  • I have so many floral fabrics....SO MANY
  • I need to make some more accessories with my scraps to clear out the craft room nursery
  • This was easier than last because I had dedicated so much time and energy to just making maternity clothes.
  • I'm more proud of myself so far, because I focused on making really wearable pieces that I can dress up and down, so it's been way less stressful this year.
Sorry for the late post (meant to put this up Monday) but between work stuff and not having a working computer at home and not being able to save things on my iPad right now, it's been tricky to find time to write.  Hopefully next week, I'll make a better system.  I did post to Instagram though!

Too Many Interests

There's a saying:  Jack of all trades, master of none.  Which is how I feel more than 90% of the time.  I can do a handful of things fairly well, but I can't do any particular trade particularly well.   What you will see in this blog is a smattering of what I like as well as some family stories mixed in.  This list includes but is not limited to: Drawing Painting Animating Music Sewing Embroidering Crafting Needle felting Knitting Crochet Croquet Food Eating Building Breaking Teaching Dog walking You know, usual stuff.  Tutorials mixed in, one hopes, as well as completed projects.   I can't promise much outside this, but I'll try to amuse you like a sewing, dancing Schnauzer puppy.  Like my Schnauzer puppy.  He amuses me. I might also complain about messing projects up.  That's likely too. No matter what, I'm going to enjoy myself and I hope you do too.

Me Made Maternity Week 4 Wrap Up

Monday:   Seamwork Jane tie front shirt in blue stripes from Joann's No photo, busy day You know what I find interesting: I have been on Instagram looking at outfits for other sewists rocking their #mmmay looks, and I have been reusing so many pieces this year.  I am super impressed with those who can make and wear a whole bunch of stuff, but my time right now does not allow it.  And you know what: I'm actually really happy with the repeats.  I feel like I haven't styled them the exact same way every time, like trying out different bottoms with the tops or different accessories.  I think, however, that I do need to branch outside of jeans a little and mix up skirts some more.  I think, especially at this time of year for teachers, it is super easy to get caught doing the same look. Tuesday:   Butterick slacks by mom in grey stretch from Joann's Again, no photo, busy day.  Again, I wish these pants had pockets, but I'm really feeling how I c...

Me Made May 6: Week Two is Through

Sunday:  Agnes Top from Tilly and the Buttons Casual Sunday #agnestop #tillyandthebuttons #mmmay17 #memademay2017 #iactuallywentawholeweek A post shared by The Shreve (and Carvalho) (@nestingdollsofscience) on May 7, 2017 at 12:43pm PDT Monday: Rae Skirt in polyester #Raeskirt what you don't see is the paper clips holding the skirt up since the elastic broke #mmmay17 #memademay2017 #sulerstar A post shared by The Shreve (and Carvalho) (@nestingdollsofscience) on May 8, 2017 at 4:39pm PDT So I have learned a lot by making mistakes and cutting corners.  The corner I cut?  I didn't sew the elastic together strongly enough.  Now, why this is often not an issue, at a certain point, it'll come apart if put under enough stress on the seam.  Or any stress.  Or just over time.  So...the elastic came apart first thing Monday morning.  Didn't have enough time to fix or a sewing kit.  What did I do?  Paper clip my skirt...
